Stories behind released images
Information
Thank you for taking the time to browse this website. The images here represent the best of my work, my portfolio!
I do try to update this site reasonably regularly, but the easiest way to stay
up-to-date is to subscribe to one of the RSS Feeds. Either the feed from my blog or
the flickr photostream. I tend to upload my latest images to flickr (user name of 'calanais') and then
migrate the best over to here.

Why photography?
One of the aims of my photography is to communicate
the beauty of the wider world through primarily plant-life and landscape images. The wide open landscapes of Scotland
are a particular attraction, but sadly Scotland is a long way from Hampshire.
As you travel around the site you will see that a lot of the images are of the natural world. I started photography at a time when
I was much involved in fundraising for conservation, and supporting the WWF's mission of protecting the world's habitats. We do not have the right to plunder the world as
we see fit - we are merely custodians of the planet who must hand it on
to future generations of animals, and plants to live in.
Although still a core belief, the advent of family has altered my artistic interpretation of world (and indeed reduced time available!). Indeed my current images
are moving more to the abstract setting. Why I'm not quite sure, but that's life for you!

For some other general musings on photography, I try to update my
blog.
Technical Information
I'm a confirmed Nikon user so a lot of the images here are taken on a D100 - although now "out-of-date" the quality of the
photograph is in the hands of the photography. But I have now updated this to a D7000.
In equipment terms I would say that it is better to spend on the lens
I use a variety of lens but primarily the 60mm MicroNikkor, 18-200 VR Nikkor, and 12-24 Nikkor. A few images are also
taken with the Lensbaby 2.0. In the right context and with the correct subject matter this can produce a
stunning image; without any manipulation.
Image manipulation is something I try to avoid. I prefer to get things
correct in-camera. Frankly I'd rather be taking the pictures then spending hours indoors manipulating.
Together with Lee ND Filters, a Manfrotto Tripod, and LowePro rucksack the kit is complete.
If you're specifically interested in how a picture was taken, then send
me an
email.
